Can an enlarged prostate cause erectile dysfunction? This is one of the most common questions my patients ask. In fact, when I evaluate patients who come to me with symptoms of an enlarged prostate, it is quite common to find that they are also experiencing erectile dysfunction.
The answer is actually this: Not directly, but indirectly, yes.
The prostate itself is not an organ that directly produces an erection. However, as we age, several common changes occur throughout the body. In particular, atherosclerotic changes in the blood vessels of the lower abdomen—meaning narrowing of the arteries and loss of their elasticity—can reduce blood flow to the penis. The same process can also affect the function of the prostate and bladder.
A Common Underlying Mechanism
In other words, an enlarged prostate and erectile dysfunction are often not completely independent conditions. They are frequently different manifestations of the same underlying biological process.
For this reason, some of the medications used to treat erectile dysfunction can also improve urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate.
In summary, an enlarged prostate does not directly cause erectile dysfunction. However, because these conditions often share common underlying mechanisms, they frequently occur together. Therefore, evaluating and treating both conditions simultaneously is the most appropriate approach.
