What Are Urinary Disorders?
12 January 2026Hello, I am Professor Dr. Şükrü Kumsar. Today, we will discuss a topic that frequently comes to the forefront both medically and socially. Is circumcision performed only for religious or cultural reasons? What are the benefits or advantages of being circumcised? What are the scientific facts? We will talk about these issues.
First of all, circumcision is defined as the surgical removal of the foreskin that covers the head of the penis. I would like to emphasize once again that this is a surgical procedure. Therefore, it must be performed under sterile conditions and with appropriate anesthesia. As we know, circumcision has been practiced for many years in societies around the world for religious and cultural reasons. Circumcision rates reach nearly 100% in Islamic and Jewish communities, while they range between 10% and 20% in Christian populations.
However, circumcision is not performed solely for religious or cultural reasons; it can also be recommended for medical indications. For example, circumcision may be advised in cases where the foreskin is severely adherent or in patients with recurrent urinary tract infections.
Medical and Protective Benefits of Circumcision
When we look at the medical benefits of circumcision, one of the most prominent advantages is improved hygiene. Without the foreskin, the glans penis can be cleaned more easily. This reduces the accumulation of bacteria and fungi in this area. As a result, the risk of urinary tract infections decreases, as does the frequency of infections such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans penis) and posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin).
Another important point is that scientific studies have shown a lower risk of transmission of sexually transmitted infections such as HPV and HIV in circumcised men. This finding suggests that circumcision may play a protective role in terms of sexual health.
In conclusion, when performed correctly, circumcision can provide many benefits both for individual hygiene and public health. However, it should be emphasized once again that circumcision is a surgical procedure that must be carried out under sterile conditions, with appropriate medical equipment, and by trained healthcare professionals.
