What Is Urology? Which Diseases Does Urology Treat?
22 December 2025Hello, I am Professor Dr. Şükrü Kumsar. In today’s video, we will discuss a topic that is rarely talked about but is actually very important for both individual and public health: pre-marital male health screening. Is this truly unnecessary, or is it in fact a long-overdue need? Let’s take a closer look.
As we know, in almost all societies, women undergo gynecological examinations and certain screenings before marriage or when planning a pregnancy. However, a similar approach for men is almost nonexistent worldwide. Yet male health directly affects not only the individual himself, but also his partner and future child.
Recent scientific studies show that as the father’s age increases, the risks of congenital anomalies, autism spectrum disorders and certain genetic conditions also increase. In addition, men may carry certain genetic diseases—such as SMA, cystic fibrosis, or sickle cell anemia—without showing any symptoms, and these can unknowingly be passed on to the child. Therefore, a simple genetic screening before marriage helps couples make informed decisions and prevents significant health problems in the future.
The Role of Infection and Genetic Screening
Moreover, early detection of common infectious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HPV not only improves treatment outcomes but also protects the partner and the future child.
In conclusion, pre-marital male health screening is certainly not unnecessary—on the contrary, it is an essential need that has been overlooked until now. For this reason, genetic counseling, infection screenings and a general health evaluation before marriage are, in my opinion, among the first and most important steps toward building a healthy family.
