7 September 2026Normally, a person has two kidneys. When both kidneys are unable to perform their functions, this condition is referred to as kidney failure, and in advanced stages, the patient may only be able to survive with dialysis.
Kidney failure can develop for various reasons. One of these is obstruction caused by urinary tract stones and kidney stones.
Can Kidney Stones Cause Kidney Failure?
Yes. Approximately 10% of kidney failure cases develop as a result of urinary tract stones.
If a patient has only one kidney and a stone obstructs that kidney, or if stones obstruct both kidneys, prolonged obstruction can impair kidney function. Over time, this may lead to kidney failure and the need for dialysis.
In particular, stones located within the kidney may not cause pain and can therefore progress silently. In some cases, patients may not seek medical attention until signs of kidney failure develop.
For this reason, if you have a history of kidney stones, a family history of kidney stones, recurrent urinary tract infections, or only one functioning kidney, it is very important to undergo regular evaluations with simple tests such as blood tests, urine tests, and ultrasonography.
