Hello, I’m Professor Dr. Şükrü Kumsar. Today, we will talk about herbal products that claim to enhance sexual performance — items that appear frequently both in traditional medicine and in the modern era of e-commerce.
There are hundreds of products on the market labeled as natural, herbal, or side-effect free. But how many of these are truly effective from a scientific standpoint, and how many are merely commercial deceptions?
The use of such products is almost as old as human history itself, and indeed, some herbal ingredients can have positive effects on sexual functions. These products may provide benefits, especially in cases of psychogenic sexual desire disorders or performance anxiety. However, their effects are usually limited and may vary greatly from person to person.
The main problem lies in the fact that most of these herbal products lack reliable dosage and content standardization. Moreover, analyses have revealed that some products contain undeclared synthetic substances such as sildenafil or its derivatives. You may think you are using a natural herbal supplement purchased from a herbalist or ordered online, yet unknowingly be taking pharmaceutical drugs. This can cause serious health issues. The dosage of the hidden ingredient might be high, or you might have a medical condition in which such substances are contraindicated — leading to low blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias, and other serious side effects.
Another major concern is that most of these products are marketed without any scientific evidence, relying solely on promotional claims. The actual content of so-called natural aphrodisiacs is often unclear. This risk is especially higher for products purchased online, through social media, or from overseas sources.
So, what should we do? If you are experiencing symptoms such as low sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, or performance anxiety, the underlying causes should first be investigated. These problems can stem from hormonal imbalances, vascular diseases, psychological factors, or medications being used.
In conclusion, while herbal products may appear harmless, uncontrolled and unconscious use can lead to serious health problems. Even if there are truly effective supplements, their use should always be under the supervision of a qualified medical professional.
