Case Study on Penile Prosthesis Surgery (Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction)
20 April 2026As is known, premature ejaculation is classified into two groups: lifelong and acquired (developing later), and ejaculation occurring within less than one minute is defined as premature ejaculation.
What Is Intermittent Premature Ejaculation and Why Is It Important?
There is a group of patients we frequently encounter in clinical practice that does not fit these classical definitions and is often not offered treatment, even by physicians. This group is referred to as intermittent premature ejaculation. In these patients, premature ejaculation does not occur in every sexual encounter. In other words, it may occur sometimes and not at other times. However, studies have shown that these patients experience premature ejaculation in approximately 70% of their sexual activities.
Intermittent premature ejaculation is an ejaculation control disorder that does not occur in every sexual encounter but appears from time to time and is characterized by premature ejaculation in a significant proportion of sexual activities.
Studies have demonstrated that in men with this type of premature ejaculation, the ejaculation latency during masturbation is longer compared to partnered sexual intercourse. This suggests that the problem is not solely due to a biological insufficiency. In patients with intermittent premature ejaculation, multiple underlying factors may be involved, including psychological factors, performance anxiety, relationship dynamics, and certain organic conditions.
As a result, intermittent premature ejaculation can be an important condition that significantly affects both the individual and the couple’s sexual life. Even if it does not fully meet the standard diagnostic criteria, it should still be recognized as a real and meaningful clinical problem.
